🌍✨ Energy Stories from Kampala: Listening, Learning, Building Together

In July 2025, EnDi held a focus group in Kampala, Uganda organized by Spotlight Kampala. Local community representatives and entrepreneurs shared how energy costs, blackouts, brownouts and unreliable electricity supply shape their daily lives.

A mother and bakery owner explained how her household juggles gas, electricity, and charcoal to keep meals on the table and her small business running.  Blackouts and brownouts force her to constantly adapt, she told us. Another participant, a farmer, spoke about how steady power could mean reliable irrigation and bigger harvests for his family and neighbors. Across the group, people described the challenges of frequent outages, costly tariffs, and damaged appliances, but also painted a vivid picture of what stable energy could unlock: food preservation, modern cooking, and expanded micro-enterprises.

When we introduced the EnDi battery, the enthusiasm was clear. People saw possibilities for powering small businesses, modern appliances, and urban farming — not just backup energy, but a pathway to opportunity and growth.

We are grateful to Spotlight Kampala, a collaboration of universities, community-based organizations, and local advocates advancing just energy transitions across Uganda and Africa. Led by Dr. Jess Kersey (UC Berkeley) and Paul Kyoma (Lecturer at the Urban Action Lab at Makerere University), Spotlight works in 25 informal settlements to ensure energy solutions are rooted in community priorities and lived realities.

At EnDi, we are committed to carrying these insights forward and building solutions together that expand access, resilience, and opportunity.
